While the volunteer members from Greenbelt were finishing up house work and apparatus checks during the "VSU" day, Engine 353 was dispatched with surrounding units for a bus on fire with children on board.
Chief 35-B (Ransom) was first arriving on the scene and updated the location as being northbound on the B/W Parkway just south of Powdermill Road. He advised that all occupants were out of the nearly fully involved bus. Engine 353 arrived shortly after with three volunteers and quickly extinguished the flames.
Having the "Parkway" command, Chief Ransom held the engine from Beltsville as well to assist with extinguishment. Two children occupants were transported to a local hospital for check up after being exposed to a high level of Carbon Monoxide.
Units cleared the Parkway in just under an hour.
