On the evening of Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011, just as the Volunteers at the GVFD were sitting down to dinner, the box alarm was struck for 45th Avenue in Co. 31's first due (Beltsville) for the report of smoke in the house. Engine 351 responded as fourth due engine with six personnel, and Chief 35B.
As units responded to the scene, Public Safety Communications updated the call, advising a next door neighbor reported that there was a working basement fire. Engine Co. 31 arrived on scene moments later to report a split level, single family home with smoke showing.
Engine 351 picked up the hydrant a block from the scene, pulled a back-up line from Co. 41's wagon, and positioned themselves at the patio door to the basement on Side Charlie (the rear of the house). The crew from Co. 35 assisted in ventilation and opened up walls and ceiling in the basement.
The Volunteers returned the 'house within an hour.
